Our Engagement Story!
“As soon as I saw you, I knew a grand adventure was about to happen.” - A.A. Milne
I can’t believe I’m writing this! This is not how I expected our vacation to go...
A little backstory, Mark and I have dated for the last two years. We joke about being that couple that 'moves fast'. Our favorite running joke is that we moved in together on our third date and never left each other alone. Knowing that we'd get married has been a part of our 'moving too fast'. For about a year, we've joked around about tying the knot. It's all just silly games until someone decides to make it serious. Well, Mark decided he wanted to make it serious.
On the 16th (Monday), our plane landed in New York. We checked into our hotel, showered and got dressed to stroll around town. We had an hour to kill before Mark's family would arrive and we would all meet for lunch. Mark and I decided to get started on our adventure by wandering through the neighborhood. We ended up making our way the few blocks to Central Park.
Let me say, that on a warm Summer morning, the park is verdant and beautiful - like Paradise. Plus, Mark had purchased a carriage ride through the park for the two of us! It's one of those cliche tourist things that you have to do if given the chance. I can't explain how excited I was. After four hours of being stuck in an airplane, I couldn't wait to stretch my legs.
After our ride, we meet his family to do even more sight seeing. Dusk came quickly, as we all made our way back to the park and walked a trail back towards our hotel. It was getting dark around the edges with sparklings of firelies sprinkling magic in the shadows. The loud sounds from earlier in the day, hushed in awe. Central Park really is a beautiful place. Mark and I walked along, pointing out fireflies, before he decided that we had to go try to catch a few.
We followed a trail, until we reached an immense rock formation that rose above the park, creating a hilly overlook. Of course I had to climb it. I'd seen a child standing on it earlier in the day, and thought it would make a great picture of the two of us.
As we breathlessly reached the top, I looked over for my partner in crime and he was digging in his pocket for something. He handed me a small velvet bag, with the pretext that it was a gift for a wedding we'd attend later that week. I thought we were in a pretty weird spot for him to give me a gift, but didn't think much more of it. I reached into the bag and pulled out a ring. That's when I realized he was sinking to one knee, and his sister in law and brother were recording us, and then it hit me. He was proposing! I felt every joyful emotion all at once! He was saying how much he loves me, how amazing the last two years have been, how he's ready to spend the rest of our life together, and...then I got a little too excited. I couldn't even wait for him to ask me to marry him! I blurted out a few things, but I remember "yes" being the most important. Him, so set on his speech, he didn't hear me so I said it again and this time, I leaned over and kissed him. That got the point across!
We were over the moon (and sitting on the rock really felt like it)! His family left us to have some alone time and we couldn't pull ourselves away from one another. We sat right on the top of that rock for an hour, teary eyed and cozy, while I called my mom and told her the good news and Mark finished the parts of his speech he could remember. He explained that he'd spent months working with my family to design and pick out my ring, right under my nose! Both of our families knew for months! I can't believe they did so well keeping it a secret from me. It's been the biggest surprise of my life, and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. There are so few true surprises left in life. I'm flabbergasted that he would go so far to of his way to create one for me, especially something so large!
We've been engaged for just about two weeks and the butterflies haven't worn off.I’m ecstatic to start the next step in our big adventure together! And a little nervous and a little overwhelmed and very, very surprised. But I’m ready, because I have him and he has me and I can’t think of anyone else I’d rather do this with.
